Getting from Swiss airports to the city centre by public transport

*From Zurich airport to Zurich main railway station(HB)

It is very easy & quick to transfer by train from Zurich Airport in Kloten to the city centre main railway station. (Hauptbahnhof) It only takes about 10- 15 minutes and tranis are frequent. They start running from 5 am – and run till late at night.
Moreover, it is a by far a far cheaper option than a taxi. Taxis are expensive in Switzerland, an Airport transfer costs upwards of 30 SFr plus tip and might take longer than the train due to heavy traffic in central Zurich.
Most trains going to various Swiss cities pass via Kloten Airport, just take any of them which mentions it is going to Zurich HB or HBf . (Hauptbahnhof)
If you wish to  check out the Swiss rail time table ahead of arrival in Zuerich see here
The train fare of this transfer ticket costs around 7 SFr (£4.-) per person. (Note: the transfer ticket will also be valid on the trams and buses in Zurich on the day of purchase, so make use of it)
Don’t forget to buy your ticket prior to boarding a train. They are available from the many self service touch screens vending machines or from the ticket office in the Kloten Airport train station.

How to reach the Kloten train station and ticket offices:

After exiting the arrival hall at Zuerich Airport, it is possible to wheel your trolley all the way to the basement where all trains depart and where you will also find the rail ticket offices and ticket vending machines. There are escalators or elevators you can use. Pictograms  direct you to the train station in the basement.

The Zuerich Card

If you are staying longer in Zurich and/or wish to explore the city, it might be worth your while to purchase a Zurich Card,  it saves you money using public transport and it also offers discounts to restaurants and free entry to museums.  Go to the ticket office in Kloten Airport railway station and ask for details. The staff will be happy to advise you and they all speak good English. Information about the Zuerich Card see here

An alternative public transfer from Zurich Airport is to take  Tram Nr 10 which also takes you from the airport to the city centre (HB) Depending where you wish to go in central Zurich, taking the tram might be the better option. The fare is the same as the train. For an overview of the tram network see here (the pink line is Nr 10)
